A man was arrested and charged with possession of a fake Viagra pill in a San Diego pharmacy after authorities found anabolic steroids. The search of the two-year-old was conducted by an employee of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.
The case is being investigated by the Food and Drug Administration. An analysis of the seized drug samples revealed sildenafil, the active ingredient in the popular prescription drug Viagra, has been banned in Europe due to its side effects.
“Viagra is the perfect supplement to our male enhancement programs,” said San Diego County sheriff’s spokesman Scott Smith. “The drug will not be as effective in helping you with performance.”
The search turned up a mixture of Sildenafil citrate, a common prescription-only medication used to treat erectile dysfunction, and other illicit drugs. The results were not conclusive and were not released until the investigation was complete.
A second case had been identified when authorities in the United States seized two counterfeit Viagra pills on Wednesday.
The counterfeit pills were a mixture of 10,000-milligram sildenafil, sold under the brand name Viagra, and a “little pink pill” called “Cigallol”.
“Cigallol is the name for sildenafil citrate, which is the active ingredient in Viagra. It is also the brand name for the generic version of sildenafil,” the FDA said in a statement.
The FDA had been unable to identify the source of the counterfeit drugs. The agency said it would work with the FDA to identify other drugs that may have similar side effects.
